Is breakfast important?

There is an old adage which goes, “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.” This indicates that breakfast should be the main meal of the day, followed by a moderate lunch and a milder repast for dinner. But in our busy morning schedules of shooing the kids out of the door and running out with our bags and coats flying, breakfast is the first thing that gets sacrificed.

Rather than grabbing a carbohydrate-rich bagel at your nearest cafe, I urge you to spend a few minutes every morning preparing this super easy, super nutritious, and super yummy Oatmeal Banana Smoothie.

  4. Good-to-go – Blend it and refrigerate overnight or throw it together in the morning, pour it in a beverage sipper and you can reach for it while on the move.

Ingredients

  • Bananas – The riper the bananas, the tastier and sweeter the smoothie. Also, frozen bananas can make the smoothie extra creamy and smooth. Tip: If you have bananas that are going bad, slice them up and freeze them. Not only with they make a delicious smoothie, frozen banana slices in the freezer make it super quick to whip up a smoothie on busy mornings.
  • Oatmeal – Rolled oats or quick/ instant oats work well.
  • Almond Milk – I used chocolate-flavored almond milk. (I had picked up a chocolate-flavored pack by mistake, but it tasted really good.) But any almond milk like sweetened, unsweetened, vanilla flavored etc will go perfectly well. Dairy or non-dairy, regular full fat or low-fat milk will taste just as good. You may have to adjust the sweetness to your liking.
  • Maple Syrup – Added for a little rich sweetness.
  • Cinnamon – Added for a hint of spicy flavor and aroma.

Variations

  1. Take this as a base, add any other fruits/veggies if you have such as strawberries, peach, kale, spinach etc. Banana is excellent in masking any strong taste of other veggies.
  2. Add a scoop of protein powder to get a head start on your protein intake for the day.
  3. One or two teaspoons of good quality nut butter like peanut butter or almond butter to load up on some healthy fats to the Oatmeal Banana Smoothie.
  4. Add chia seeds, flax seeds for added health benefits and texture.

Whip up my Oatmeal Banana smoothie

Add all the ingredients in a blender jar and blend it until it comes together into a smooth creamy mixture. Top it with some chopped bananas or nuts((check)) and your healthy ‘Oatmeal Banana Smoothie’ is ready.

Smoothie Tips

  1. To make it easy and also use up any overripe bananas, slice and freeze sliced banana.
  2. Smoothies tastes better when chilled, so along with frozen banana slices add chilled milk or throw in a couple of ice cubes.
  3. I have tried keeping the smoothie overnight in refrigerator. Next day though it tastes just fine, the colour slightly darkens because of the bananas and also oats soaks up the liquid making the smoothie a little more thicker.
