Savory French Toast
Not just any savory French toast, these are stuffed with a creamy cheese and parmesan mixture, dipped in a custardy garlic egg mixture, and pan-fried until golden brown. These make for an excellent brunch on a lazy weekend or a breakfast when you want to indulge a bit.

I love a good French toast, but of late, I am watching my sugar intake and including more eggs, savoury breakfast options. Growing up, my mom used to make this savoury version with leftover bread for a quick after-school snack. I have taken that humble childhood snack and upgraded to a little fancier breakfast/brunch thing – Cream Cheese Savory French Toast. But this is a super quick and easy-to-make recipe.
The stuffing is made with a creamy, tangy herbed cream cheese mix. Then the sandwiched bread is dipped in egg mixture and pan-fried in butter until the bread is light brown in colour. You can easily make a big batch of it for a crowd with a bit of prep.

Ingredients For Savoury French Toast
- Bread– Any sandwich bread of your choice, which is firm and thick enough to hold the stuffing. For this recipe, I don’t prefer sourdough bread, but if that’s what you have, then you can use it.
- Butter – To toast the bread.
- Eggs
- Milk– Or half & half for a richer, more creamy coating.
- Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper
- For Cream cheese stuffing – Cream cheese, mayo, parmesan cheese, garlic powder, pepper, and chives. Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature. You can use green onion or parsley for herbs, too. I sometimes add a pinch of pepper flakes to the mix.

Steps to make
Make cream cheese mix – Mix together softend cream cheese, mayo, freshly grated parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, garlic powder and chopped chives. It should be of spreadable consistency.
Spread the mix on bread– Place 2 bread slices, eqaully divided the mix among two slices of bread. Then place other bread slice on top to make a sandwich.
Make egg mixture – mix together eggs, dijon mustard,milk/cream, salt, pepper. You can add chopped parsely and a good sprinkle of Parmesan cheese if you wish.
Coat bread with egg mixture– Place stuffed bread and coat both the sides with egg mixture. You can rest the bread in egg mixture for 5-10 minutes for the bread to soak the liquid well.
Pan fry – Grease a skillet generously with butter. Pan fry in on medium heat until the bread is light golden in colour and is not wet to touch.
Can we make it ahead?
These taste best when made fresh and served hot. However, if you are making it for a large crowd, after you coat the bread with egg mix, cover and refrigerate overnight, just like you make overnight French toast or breakfast casserole.
